INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC DEPARTMENT
We believe that there is not just one kind of band student. So we have designed our band program to have something for everyone. We have many class offerings and all are constructed with various levels of participation and performance expectations in mind.
Concert Band: directed by Mrs. Ripley and Mr. Zalenski
A group for all 7th grade band members that want to continue their musical development with basic skills and musical experiences. This group also contains high school band members that desire to learn an instrument for the first time, return to an instrument they have played previously or learn a new instrument in addition to the one they currently play. This group performs 2-3 concerts per year. An audition is not required for this ensemble.
Jazz Band: directed by Mr. Zalenski
A group for all high school band members that want to develop a firm understanding of the basic principles of jazz regarding style, harmony, structure and improvisation. The instrumentation for this ensemble is very specific and includes electric guitar and electric bass guitar. This group performs 3-4 times per year. Director approval must be granted before entry into this ensemble.
Marching Band: directed by Mrs. Ripley; assisted by Mr. Zalenski
A group for all high school band members, grades 8-12, that want to continue their musical development while expanding their skill set to include corps-style marching and the memorization of music and drill. Students in this ensemble perform multiple times per year including performances at football games, soccer games, Veteran's Day programs, numerous parades and many other events. The Marching Band is a prerequisite to both the Symphonic Band and the Wind Ensemble.
Symphonic Band: directed by Mr. Zalenski
A group for all high school band members, grades 8-12, that want to continue their musical development and want the most out of their band experience. It offers advanced musical experiences with high performance expectations. This ensemble is for students that are serious about their craft but are not quite musically ready for the Wind Ensemble. This group performs 3 concerts per year. All students audition for placement. Marching Band is a prerequisite for admission to this class.
Wind Ensemble: directed by Mrs. Ripley
A group for band members in grades 8-12 that want the most from their band experience and have developed the skills necessary for entry into this ensemble. It offers the most advanced musical experiences with the highest of performance expectations. This ensemble is for students that are very serious about their craft and want an experience of true musical excellence. This group performs 4-5 times per year. All students are required to audition for entry. Marching Band is a prerequisite for admission to this class.
Color Guard: Instructors-Mrs. Andrea Stark and Ms. Shannon Dombroski
The color guard is the visual component of the marching band consisting of flags, rifles, sabres and dance. These are students who are instrumental band members during concert season and also enjoy expressing the music visually. Entrance into the color guard is through audition only and is open to any student who is willing to join the band during concert season and learn an instrument.
Winter Guard: Instructors-Mrs. Andrea Stark and Ms. Shannon Dombroski
The winter guard is a group of color guard members who choose to continue their performance and training throughout the winter.
