New Facility Update

Harrison Hills City Schools New PK-12
Construction Update

• Completed building locker room bearing masonry walls.

• Continue setting door frames as well as plumbing/HVAC/electrical rough-ins as the masonry walls are constructed.

• Planning to begin final underground electrical rough-in at the kitchen as weather permits.

• Preparing to install the plumbing underground piping in the administration/middle school wing of the building as weather permits.

• Completed building the lower level interior bearing masonry walls in the administration wing of the building.

• Building the lower level exterior masonry bearing walls at the administration/middle school wing of the building.

District Office

• Mrs. Snider met with Sheriff Myers and Officer Brooks concerning procedures for inappropriate use at school and at home of district computers .

• The superintendent attended the annual school day wrestling match.

• The Superintendent and Board of Education members would like to congratulate to all district spelling bee participants and to the grand champion Andy Toth.

• Mrs. Snider attended the OLI4 Principal Leadership Academy with Ms. Birney, Mr. Dunlap, Mr. Clifford, and Mr. Saffell. The workshop focused on data driven instruction, non-negotiables, and effective teaching strategies.

• The treasurer met with Meeder Investments and did a yearly review of all investments.

• W2’s were sent to the buildings and distributed to the employees.

• The budget hearing was held on January 11 and the treasurer will file it this week with the county auditor.

• The organizational meeting was held on January 11. The meeting schedule has changed slightly and all dates and times can be found on the district’s web page under About Us; Board of Education and to the right is the listing of dates and times. The board has chosen to use a winter/summer start time and all meetings but 3 will be held the last Thursday of the month. March, November and December will be the 3rd Thursday of the month.

• Harrison Hills gained one substitute driver this week and had another express interest in becoming certified.

• Main heater at Harrison East was repaired with a new motor.

• Thank you to our mechanics and custodians for clearing the buildings during the winter weather.

• Mr. Ripley continues to complete OAPSE evaluations.

• Roads continue to be checked during the hazardous weather conditions.

• Husky wrestlers hosted River View in a match on Wednesday.

• Mr. Hayes’ students created “Pinterest Boards” of the American Revolution.

Harrison East Elementary

• Harrison Hills district-wide spelling bee was held recently and proudly representing Harrison East were Mykel Quito, Adrianna Corder, Aiden Hays, Brady McPeak, Alex Dray, and Ava Carson . Pictured below are Brady McPeak, 7th place winner; Alex Dray, 6th place winner; and Ava Carson, 5th place winner. Congratulations to all who participated and especially to those who will move on the Regional spelling bee on March 10th at Buckeye North Elementary.

• These fourth graders celebrated their star reading achievement by having a party. They played snowman bash, alien bowling, and snowball toss. They received Twizzlers and Valentine gels. Stay tuned to find out who will meet the third quarter goal.

• Students are playing a social studies vocabulary game competition where Mr. Bengier reads the definition and rings a bell and they have to turn around and smack the correct vocabulary word. Students loved the competition and the group with the most points won the game!

• Mrs. Noble’s 1st grade students learned about the important contributions Martin Luther King, Jr. made to our society. They showed what they had learned in creating his likeness and listing his some of his accomplishments.

• PAWS Afterschool students are trying to complete a circuit board and make the light bulb light up.

• Officer Tony, Harrison County’s DARE officer, spent the 2nd 9-weeks getting to know East’s 1st and 2nd graders. They learned ways to be safe and help keep others safe around them as well as ways to be smart with technology and medications.

• Ms. Coffman, Ms. Wickham, and Ms. Dodds attended Region 12 PAX Good Behavior Game Teacher training at the State Support Team building in Byesville, Ohio

• Harrison North Elementary announces December students of the month. Reed Arbaugh-5th grade placed as an alternate to the Regional bee in March

Lilian Gibbons - 5th grade placed 8th and will compete in the Regional bee in March

Carys Haney - 6th grade placed 2nd and will compete in the Regional bee in March

• Mr. Saffell held a professional development on progress monitoring plans through Renaissance.

• Kindergarten had their last DARE session with Deputy Sedgmer this week.

• Miss Tipton’s 2nd grade had guest reader Kim Coleman this week. Mrs. Coleman is a retired teacher. She taught grades 4th, 5th, and 6th, but mostly 4th over her 35 years of teaching. She has been retired for 7 years. Her grandson, Brody is in Miss Tipton’s classroom. She read and taught students about sea turtles. She read to them, “Tammy Turtle A Tale of Saving Sea Turtles, & National Geographic Sea Turtles.” After reading and discussing sea turtles students made eatable sea turtles using pretzels, pecans, and Nutella. She wrapped up her visit with a coloring sheet and word search about sea turtles.

• January staff meeting was held.
