Construction Update

District Office

• The superintendent, treasurer and attorney Spahn worked on the US Postal Lease, AEP Easement Agreement and Trans Canada Agreement. All documents were board approved last Thursday.

• Mrs. Snider attended East's Fall Festival where students and parents learned about Accelerated Reader points, made slime, played games, colored pictures, and learned about school-time yoga.

• The October Board of Education meeting was held on 10/26 where retires, new Master Teachers, and Best Practice Award recipients were honored.

• OAPSE and Administration met Tuesday for a Labor Relations meeting.

• The monthly administrators' meeting was held on Wednesday.

• The fiscal office has been working with state auditors providing all information requested for the FY2017 audit.

• The treasurer met with Hammond Construction concerning the financial records for the building project.

• Adjustments have been made to busing to increase efficiency for all schools.

• Winter trip meeting is being held November 3, 2017 at 6 PM in the district office professional development room.

Harrison Central Jr/Sr High

• The football team and cheerleaders went to the Carriage Inn for dinner and to say hello to residents.

• 8th & 9th graders that passed all of their state tests were rewarded with a movie at Quaker Cinema and lunch!

• Academic Challenge Team beat St. Clairsville 35-75! Good Job!

• Senior football players attended the VALES press conference.

• Thank you to the seniors that helped at the Food Bank on Wednesday!

• Football players visited Harrison North to read to 2nd grade.

• Trunk or Treat brought out some cute costumes! Thank you to everyone that participated!

• Wagner Field hosted a district semi-final and final game for East District girls soccer.

• Students participated in different activities during Red Ribbon Week. The SADD Club organized dress up days to “say no to drugs.”

Harrison East Elementary

• Taking advantage of the beautiful fall weather, 4th grade science students went on a local nature walk. The observed trees, leaves, and seeds and collected samples of each.

• Congratulations to a patch of 4th grade super readers! Pictured below are students who met their AR reading goal for the 1st 9-weeks!

• Pictured below are 3rd graders who are getting geared up for Ohio state testing in English/Language Arts. They are using technology along with Sleuth books. The books are included in the Reading Street series and allows students to recognize and answer higher level questions based on the text they read.

• Over 240 students, friends, and family came to participate in a wide variety of activities in our annual Fall Family Fun Night. Prize baskets were awarded, books were read with quizzes taken, slime was made, corn hole was played, and plenty of dancing took place. Thanks goes to our PTO and staff who made this a truly fun night.

• For Fire Safety Month a special thanks goes out to the Hopedale Volunteer Fire Department for coming and sharing with our students many fire safety tips. Assistant Fire Chief Mike Moore, Sean Donato, Andy Bowersock, Clay Gilliam, and Jess Moore were the presenters.

• Second grader Emma Palmer reached her AR goal of 25 points this week!

• In honor of Red Ribbon Week, 4th grader Michael Stock and 1st grader Morgan Stock designed a hallway sign for East. A great reminder to “just Say NO to Drugs”!

Owls

• Mrs. Rocchi's students were introduced to mindful meditation using an app called Stop Breathe Think. Feedback from students was very good! They loved the time to focus on themselves and calm their minds for a few minutes.

• In Preschool this week, Deputy Frank shared a story, "The Very Frustrated Monster" by Andi Green, along with the monster Twitch. It is one book of the series about WorryWoos. Each book has a plush monster that makes the emotions come to life. The WorryWoos help to build confidence and empowerment.

• Mrs. Soos’ first grade class has made a book through student treasures to publish. Parents are able to purchase these books for a keepsake.

• On Tuesday, October 24 Mrs. Carpenter and Mrs. Sefsick provided professional development on learning centers. Sample learning centers were sitting on the tables for staff to experiment with.

• Students from Mrs. Gaffney’s class using leaning centers in the AM after completing morning seat work.

• On Tuesday, October 24 Harrison Central High School football players came to Harrison North to read to Miss Tipton and Mrs. Gaffney’s 2nd grade classes. Each child received a free book from The 2nd & 7 foundation. This foundation was created by Luke Fickell, Ryan Miller, and Mike Vrabel. The 2nd & 7 Foundation mission: The mission of 2nd & 7 Foundation is to promote reading by providing free books and positive role models to kids in need while encouraging young athletes of the community to pay it forward. A special thank you to The 2nd & 7 foundation and to Harrison Central High School for making this day possible!

• On October 25 Deputy Tony Sedgmer was a guest during our professional development. He explained to our staff his role as the new DARE officer. He had two weeks of training in Columbus, Ohio to become the DARE officer. It has been three and a half years since Harrison Hills has had a DARE officer, and he is very excited to start the program up again. He will begin working with the primary grades.

• Harrison North held parents in the classroom during the week of October 23. Parents had the opportunity to spend thirty minutes in the classroom with their child before going to lunch.

• School lunch week was held at Harrison North October 23- 27, 2017. Families enjoyed lunch with their children during this week.
