Congratulations to this year’s winners of the Best Practice Grant. Mr. Ron Sismondo from the JCESC presented three grant awards. Congratulations to Miss Jones, Mrs. Pridemore, and Abbi Kelley for winning a grant for the greenhouse, and congratulations to Mrs. Macenczak for a winning grant for the science department. Mrs. Turner was also presented a grant award for an elementary project.

The monthly Board of Education meeting was held on October 29th. and Mr. Dunlap presented on Harrison Central’s school year progress and Mr. Lackner presented several items painted by students in the high school art class. 

Mrs. Snider completed all principal informal assessments and all principal growth plans were reviewed.

Mrs. Harding contacted PaySchools to see about expanding the system for collection of all fees related to extra-curricular activities i.e.: fundraisers, dances. Mr. Hibbs would also like to expand for athletic events. 

Mrs. Harding participated in the biweekly treasures zoom meeting. Discussion was held concerning software packages and CARES funding.

Kim Ohler and Kelly Howes from Nutrition Group met with Mrs. Harding to discuss how the cafeteria was doing in participation. They were happy to report that breakfast participation is up a good bit with lunch participation increasing each week.

The five-year forecast was approved, submitted to the state and is available on the district web page under About Us; Fiscal Office.

This month, Mrs. Taylor and Ms. Kelley were State Farm’s Teacher and Staff Member. Mrs. Taylor is a high school science teacher, who teaches a variety of sciences: anatomy, forensics, zoology, botany, and CCP biology. She has been a valuable member of our teaching staff for many years and continues to learn right alongside her students. She has embraced the numerous changes the past two years have brought and shows a true passion for her subject area. Ms. Kelley is a jack of all trades. She dedicates herself to our school in numerous ways, serving as crossing guard before and after school and as ticket taker for athletic events, but she is also an educational assistant at our junior-senior high school who has continually worked to help our students achieve their fullest potential. Her caring demeanor and helpfulness never go unnoticed. Also, Mr. Kenny won the Capital Health Care Network Rock Star Teacher Award for October. He is a proud graduate of Harrison Central and has worked as a coach in our district for many years. Although it is still early in his teaching career, he has shown an ability to interact and work with students at all levels. He obviously takes pride in the success and welfare of all our students. Congratulations to these teachers for these well-deserved awards.

The District Tournament meet, held at Cambridge High School on October 24, was the last race for the Harrison Central boys’ and girls’ team. There were only two runners, Jasmine Arnold and Logan Laney, who qualified to attend the Regional Tournament meet at Pickerington on the 31st of October. Jasmine Arnold earned 2nd place and Logan Laney placed 17th; top 32 girls and top 24 advance to Regionals. As for Junior High, both boys and girls finished their season after the State Championships at Fortress Obetz on the 24th. Good Luck to Jasmine and Logan on proceeding to Regionals!

Students in Ms. Dunlap’s class at Harrison Central Junior High joined thousands of students from over two dozen school districts across the tri-state area for a virtual matinee of 'A Tell-Tale Heart.' A new adaptation, commissioned and presented by Pittsburgh Public Theater, the one-man play weaves together themes from Edgar Allan Poe's classic horror tales, just in time for Halloween. The play was written and performed by Pittsburgh-based writer and actor Alec Silberblatt. In response to the pandemic, Pittsburgh Public Theater is providing access to all of its educational programs to area schools for free this season.

On Thursday, October 29, we held a virtual FAFSA night, which was a lot different than the previous years. 14 families were able to join the Google Meet and complete their FAFSA and get answers to any questions they had about financial aid, college, or anything else. Jody Peeler and Tracy Mattern from Franciscan University gave a very informative presentation and guided students through all the steps of filling out the FAFSA. Thank you to them for their assistance, as well as Chad Dawson and the technology department here at HC. There will be another event soon if you are interested, but were not able to make it. As a senior, this presentation was very helpful and I enjoyed listening to it; it made FAFSA a lot easier to understand and the whole process was very smooth. Thank you to everyone who set this up!

For Red Ribbon Week we did a variety of themes, but our last day of Red Ribbon Week was Costume Day. Eight of our teachers decided to go as Snow White and the seven Dwarves. Mr. Gramling was Bashful, Mrs. McIntosh was Sleepy, Ms.Roski was Happy, Mrs. Taylor was Doc, Mrs. Hawthorne was Sneezy, Mr. Butler was Grumpy, Mr. Valesko was Dopey and Mrs.Brooks was Snow White.

Congratulations to Senior golfer Sam Santille. Sam was recently recognized 1st Team Eastern District and Academic All-Ohio. In addition, he has been a member of the All Times Leader Golf Team and the Wheeling Intelligencer All Valley Golf Team.

Mr. Dom (Student teacher in 5th With Mrs. Steele) led the students in a reading activity about Bigfoot. The students measured and compared their foot to Bigfoot’s print after writing to law enforcement about their sighting. Rumors are that he was spotted near 3rd grade. Beware ??
