Huskies Talk Issue 1

August 20th. Open House and Back to School Rally both had record attendance. Thank you to the staff and Community Agencies that made these events so special. 

Athletic events are up and running. Good Luck to all teams!

The Board of Education met in an emergency session on Thursday September 2nd. and enacted a mask requirement for students and staff which will be reviewed on September 30th. 

Mr. Watson, Mrs. Snider, Mr. Morgan, and Mrs. Harding met with the Harrison County CIC and representatives from the Western Magnesium and Power Plant. These companies will provide numerous opportunities for future employment. 

Mrs. Snider attended the Cadiz Business Association where the holiday Snow-People and Christmas parade were discussed. 

The fiscal and custodial staff has been busy preparing and organizing the former Westgate Elementary building to have all remaining items removed.

The 2021 fiscal year closed with revenue exceeding expenditures by 4% over the prior fiscal year. 

Mrs. Harding and Mrs. Clements met with representatives from the Schwendeman Agency concerning their services related to the district’s health insurance and wellness program.

Mrs. Harding has been working on permanent appropriations and the 5 year forecast. One item that is making it more difficult is that the state foundation program. State funding is being completely overhauled and the final impacts will not be fully known until the first payment of October. 


Huskies Defeated by Union Local

On September 9, during week four, boys’ varsity football suffered a loss of 41-18 against Union Local. The Jets outperformed the Huskies with 145 more total yards. With touchdowns from Hayden Cassidy, Jonathan Vermillion, and Nathan Bertolino in the first half; however, the Huskies didn't score again in the second half. Union Local suffered ten penalties meanwhile Harrison held it to five.

Cross Country at Newcomerstown

On September 4, the cross country team ran at Newcomerstown. Cross country boys' time was 21:31 and the score was 263. The top three for the boys were; first place, Brent Malcomb at 40, second place, Aiden Hays at 42, and third place, Colton Howell at 80. The girls' time was 27:22 and they scored 247. The top three girls were first place, Maddy Edwards with 45, second place, Gretchen Dulkoski with 46, and third place, Jillian Foreman with 75.

Golf Victorious

On Tuesday, September 7, varsity golf was victorious when they shot 181 as a team against Martins Ferry and Weirton. This was a 9 hole tournament. Aiden Sliva shot 42, Nash Roberts shot 42, Heath Clay shot 47, Kaily Banal shot 50, and Wyatt Foreman shot 52.

Varsity Golf

On Wednesday, September 8, the Huskies golf team went against Steubenville and John Marshall. The Huskies brought home a win against Steubenville. However, the Huskies lost to John Marshall. Aiden Slivia shot a 48, Nash Roberts shot a 50, Kaily Banal shot a 51, Heath Clay shot a 52, and Wyatt Forman shot a 53.

7th Grade Volleyball Defeats Shadyside

On Wednesday, September 8, the 7th grade volleyball team took on Shadyside at home. The Huskies took the victory, beating the Tigers 2-0. The first set score was 25-10 and the second set was 25-23.

Cross Country Buckeye 8

Wednesday, September 8, was the Buckeye 8 Cross Country Championship. The Girls’ top 3 were; Maddy Edwards in 8th place with a 25:37, Gretchin Dulkoski in 10th place with a 26:16, and Danielle Drapp in 33nd place with a 32:08. The Boys’ top 3; Colton Howell in 20th place with a 21:08, Aiden Hays in 33nd place with a 22:22, and Bryce Wallace in 35th place with a 22:56. It was a hard course, but they did a pretty good job overall.

Girls’ Soccer Defeats Ridgewood

On Tuesday, September 7, the girls’ varsity team played Ridgewood at home. The girls were winning 1-0 going into halftime. They scored two more goals in the second half and won 3-0. Lily Gibbons, Hayden Elliott, and Maddy Bender all scored a goal. Goalie Vanessa Dowdle had seven saves and they had assists from Gracie Rogers and Angi Ferri.

7th Grade Volleyball vs Barnesville

On Tuesday, September 7, the 7th grade volleyball team hosted Barnesville. Unfortunately, the Huskies ended up suffering a loss. The scores were; first set 25-10 and the second set was 25 to 18.

Week 3 Community Tailgate

On Friday, September 3, at 5:45, a community tailgate was held in the weight room parking lot, prior to the football game against Bellaire. The theme of the student section that night was galaxy, in which Kenzi Bailey received best dressed and won a Chick-Fil-A gift card. The tailgate was sponsored by Ranch to Table, which provided hot dogs and the gift card. If you’re interested in attending, there will be more community tailgates to come!

8th Grade Volleyball vs Barnesville

On Tuesday, September 7, here at Harrison Central, the 8th grade volleyball team challenged Barnesville in a match, sadly ending in a defeat with the overall score being 2-0. The first set ceased with a score of 25-6 and the second set concluded with a score of 25-15.

Huskies Suffer Crushing Loss to Bellaire

The Huskies struggled all night to the Bellaire Big Reds as they lost 27-0. The Huskies fell to 2-1 on the year and the Big Reds improved to 3-0. The Huskies held the Big Reds to only 6 points in the first half, but Bellaire found success in the second half, including a pick six.

Boys’ Soccer Falls at St. Clairsville

The Huskies suffered another loss to the St.Clairsville Red Devils, with a score of 8-0.

The Huskies didn’t leave the pitch empty handed though, they went home with pride knowing that even though they lost, they played well against the Devils. Goalie Jaydis Yoho had 10 saves.

Mr. Parker Named Principal of the Year

On Thursday, September 9, Mr. Parker attended the Jefferson County ESC principal collaborative meeting. He was nominated and recognized as Principal of the Year. All principals in Jefferson County, Southern Local of Columbiana County, and Harrison Hills have an opportunity to receive this award annually. We would like to congratulate Mr. Parker on this achievement and thank him for providing his excellence to our school district.

Varsity Golf Falls to Barnesville

On September 9, the Harrison Central Huskies varsity golf played the Barnesville Shamrocks at the Cadiz Country Club. It was a nine hole match and although the Huskies put up a fight, they were defeated by the Shamrocks. The final score was Harrison 192 and Barnesville 180. Our leading scores were Aiden Sliva with a 43 and Nash Roberts with a 43.

Junior High Football Crushes Bellaire

On Wednesday, September 8, the junior high football team defeated Bellaire 24-14. The first half of the game they scored 12 points, then they scored another 12 points during the second half. Vito Parziale carried the team with the most touchdowns. Beau Rinkes came through with an interception during the second quarter. This game makes their record 1-1.

Varsity Volleyball Defeated by Barnesville

On Tuesday, September 7, the girls' varsity volleyball team played Barnesville at home. Barnesville took the win with a score of 3-0. The set scores were 25-18, 25-20 and 25-23. Maddy Butler had 27 digs, while Logan Johnson had 15 assists.

8th Grade Volleyball Victorious over Shadyside

The 8th grade volleyball team played Shadyside at home on Wednesday, September 8. 

The first set was won 25-22, and the second was 25-2, allowing the girls to leave with a big win. Jaiden Pelegreen had a total of 19 points in the second set.

8th Grade Volleyball Falls to Harding

The 8th grade volleyball team traveled to Harding on Saturday, September 4. The girls lost the first set 25-12 and the second was also lost, 25-17. This left The Huskies with an overall loss against the Harding volleyball team.

Varsity Volleyball Defeated by Beaver Local

On Thursday, September 9, varsity volleyball lost against Beaver Local with a final 3-0. In the first set the Huskies lost 25-13, the second set they lost 25-22, and the third set 25-15. The Huskies now have a record 2-4.

JV Football against Bellaire

On Saturday, September 4, at Wagner Field, the Huskies JV Football team was defeated by Bellaire. The final score was 27-0.

Football Victorious over Claymont

On August 19, the varsity football team started off the season strong with a 41-6 win against the Claymont Mustangs. The Huskies’ solid defense held the Mustangs to only 6 points, while the sophomore quarterback, Hayden Cassidy, threw for 176 yards and two touchdown passes, and with the help of seniors Trevor Carman, Nate Bertolino, and Johnathan Vermillion, the Huskies came out on top.

Back To School Rally

Friday, August 20th, students were welcomed back to a new school year. This event was held at the Track Complex from 12:00PM-2:00PM. Students enjoyed blowups and various foods. School supplies were also given out. Thank you to everyone who supported this event.

Varsity Volleyball Defeats Buckeye Local

On Tuesday, August 24 our volleyball girls hosted Buckeye Local. They were victorious, as they won 3-0, with scores of 25-12, 25-22, 25-10, making their record 1-1. The Huskies were led by McKayla Dunkle with 13 kills and Maddy Butler with 17 digs.

Girls’ Soccer Defeats Maysville

On Saturday, August 28, our girls’ soccer team played at home against Maysville High School. The girls had a big lead on Maysville, sticking it out to win the game 7-1. Lily Gibbons and Lexi Smith both had two goals. Rebecca Downs, Isabel Yeager, and Kadence Tanner all had one goal. Goalie Vanessa Dowdle had four saves for the day. The Huskies had assists from Avri Puskarich, Maddy Bender, Kadence Tanner, Kat Carman, and Angi Ferri.

Cross Country Runs Great at East Canton

On Wednesday, September 1, our high school cross country team ran at East Canton. The top three girls that ran 3 miles were: first place, sophomore Maddy Edwards with a 25:20, second place, sophomore Gretchin Dulkoski with a 25:48, and third place freshman Jasmine Garbrandt with a 31:33. The top three boys that ran 3 miles were: first place, junior Brent Malcomb with a 20:39, second place, junior Charles Garbrandt with a 21:09, and third place, sophomore Aiden Hayes with a 21:16. The girls team placed 9th and the boys 8th, overall.

Girls’ Varsity Soccer Defeated by St. Clairsville

Monday, August 30, the girls’ varsity soccer team played St. Clairsville on our home turf. Our girls put up a good fight but came up short with a score of 5-1. Lily Gibbons scored the only goal, with Isabel Yeager’s assist. Four shots on goal were made by Lexi Smith, Colette Downs, Angi Ferri, and Alina Williams. Goalie Vanessa Dowdle had 25 saves.

Girls’ Soccer Defeated by Beaver Local

Monday, August 23, the girls’ soccer team was set to play against Beaver Local at our home field at 7pm. Although they tried their best, unfortunately, the one goal they scored wasn't enough compared to the Beavers 4 goals. Lily Gibbons scored the only goal, with an assist from Angi Ferri, while Vanessa Dowdle had 6 saves.

Varsity Golf Splits match at Cadiz Country Club

On Wednesday, September 1, the Huskies golfers split a match, defeating Steubenville Central. The team scored a 178. The Huskies were led by senior Aiden Sliva who finished as match medalist with a score of 2 over par, 38. Nash Roberts added a 39 to help the Huskies.

Huskies Win Thriller at Buckeye Trail

On Friday, August 27, the Huskies edged out a close win against the Buckeye Trail Warriors, with a final score of 21-14. The Huskies gave up a few big runs early in the game but the defense stiffened in the second half to hold the Warriors. Cameron McAfee had an interception late in the fourth quarter to seal the game.

Varsity Volleyball Loses to Toronto Red Knights

On Monday, August 23, the Huskies and Toronto Red Knights went head to head. Unfortunately, the Huskies fell short in a 5 set competition and did not come home with a win. The team was led by McKayla Dunkle with 35 kills, Logan Johnson with 48 assists, and Maddy Butler with 40 digs.

Varsity Volleyball Dominates Edison

On Thursday, September 2, the Huskies volleyball team dominated Edison 3-1. They won their first two sets, ended up losing their third set, but came back and won their fourth set. Their first set was 25-19, second set was 25-19, third set was 20-25, and the fourth set was 25-16. The Huskies were led by Maddy Butler with 23 digs and 8 aces, McKayla Dunkle with 21 kills, and Logan Johnson with 20 assists. The Huskies are now 2-2.

Varsity Boys Soccer Falls to Cambridge

On Tuesday, August 24, the Huskies suffered a disheartening defeat to Cambridge with a score of 6-0. They played well during the first half, but at the start of the second half the Huskies went on a streak of bad luck and morale dipped. After heads dropped, Cambridge put a few more goals past them and won the game. Mack Marshall was goalie and finished with 12 saves.

Girls’ Soccer Defeats Cambridge

On Thursday, August 26, the girls’ varsity soccer team had an outstanding defeat against Cambridge. The final score was 4-2 with one goal made from Angi Ferri, Becca Downs, and two from Lily Gibbons. Fourteen saves were made by Vanessa Dowdle, along with one assist each from Angi Ferri and Lily Gibbons. Congratulations to all the girls for an outstanding win!

Varsity Golf Victorious

On Thursday, September 2 the Huskies varsity golf team played Steubenville and Steubenville Catholic Central, held at Steubenville Country Club. The Huskies won with an overall score of 177. Heath Clay led the team scoring a 40 and Nash Roberts followed with a 42. The team's record is now 4-3.

Varsity Volleyball Defeated by Indian Creek

On Thursday, August 26 the girls suffered a loss at Indian Creek with a score of 3-0; 14-25, 15-25, and 16-25. The girls were led by McKayla Dunkle with 13 kills and Maddy Butler with 26 digs. The girls’ record is now 1-2.

Staff Professional Development

On Wednesday, August 18 the staff members participated in professional development. They had the choice of which training they wanted to attend to increase their knowledge on many aspects to help in their teaching. Thank you to the staff members and administrators who provided the training to everyone.

Golf Buckeye 8 Action

On Tuesday August 31, the Huskies golf team finished the Buckeye 8 championship at Belmont Hills Country Club. The team finished in 4th place overall, with a 2 round total of 737. Congratulations to Nash Roberts who finished Honorable Mention with an 11th place finish.

Back to School Bash

On Friday, August 20 families enjoyed our annual Meet the Teacher and Back to School Bash. Students were excited to be reunited and can be seen below enjoying the games and inflatables at our track and field complex.

First Day Jitters

Mrs. Turner’s first grade class enjoyed making jitter juice to calm their first day worries. They read, “First Day Jitters,” made juice, a tally chart, craft, and did some writing.

Jitter Juice

Ms. Coffman’s first grade class read First Day Jitters and made Jitter Juice to help them out on their first day of school. See the pictures below of students enjoying their first day.

Second graders in Mrs. Knight’s class practice short vowel sounds using a gameboard and spinner.

Addition Review

Students in Mrs. Toward’s class have been working hard all week reviewing how to add. Students have enjoyed all of the hands-on learning. To end the week, students showed off their skills by adding “Dino spots” on their craft they created.
