Huskies Talk Issue 4

Evacuation Drill

Thank you to Officer Brooks and Officer Valesko on organizing the district evacuation drill last week. All students walked or were bussed to their evacuation sites. This drill prefers students and staff in the case of a real emergency. 

Superintendent's Updates

Mrs. Snider attended the new Ohio Principal’s Evaluation System (OPES 2.0) training at the Jefferson County Educational Service Center.

The Superintendent’s Cabinet was held October 1st. at the ESC. Discussion was held concerning the ESC’s desire to locate a day treatment center in the area. Conversation was also had about training bus drivers in the evenings and the availability of substitutes.

Teacher Based Teams Meetings

The IAT/RTI team visited all teacher based team meetings to review the intervention process

Board of Education Meeting

The Board of Education meeting was held September 30, 2021 at 6:00. Mr. Saffell spoke about our lack of bus driver substitutes and Mr. Morgan reviewed discussions held at the District Leadership Team meetings. 

Treasurer's Updates

Mrs. Harding met Shred It last week to dispose of approved records for disposal according to board policy. All other files have been moved to the new storage.

The board of education approved the request for disposal of remaining personal property items at the former Westgate Elementary. Mrs. Harding and custodial staff will be working at the site for final clean up and organization of items that will be offered for sale via sealed bid.

Mrs. Harding completed 4.5 hours of required investment training. The remaining 1.5 hours will be completed in October.

 

 

Girls’ Soccer Defeats John Marshall

On September 27, the girls’ varsity soccer team played John Marshall. It was a very close game with the score being 4-3, luckily the girls worked hard and took the win. In the first half, the Huskies made two goals and then in the second half, two more goals were scored by the Huskies. Lily Gibbons made two of the goals and Lexi Smith scored the other two, with the help of Maddy Bender, Colette Downs and Lexi Smith making the assists in this game. Congrats to the Huskies soccer girls.

Junior Varsity Football at Malvern

On September 25, the junior varsity football team played the Malvern Hornets, away. The final score was 36-6, Hornets. The Huskies fought hard, but did not bring home a win. However, they now know how to correct their mistakes for upcoming games.

Varsity Volleyball Falls to Beaver Local

On September 27, the Huskies varsity volleyball team traveled to Beaver Local. Unfortunately, they lost to the Beavers, 3-0. The first set score was 25-14, the second set was 25-15, and the third set was 25-13. McKayla Dunkle had five kills and four blocks, Nadia Tweedy had five kills, Maddy Butler had 11 digs, Sarah Touville had seven digs, and Logan Johnson had 13 assists and five digs.

Junior Varsity Volleyball Victorious over St. Clairsville

On Wednesday, September 29 the junior varsity volleyball team played against St. Clairsville. The Huskies started strong, with the first set being 25-22, and kept the winning streak with their second set 25-20. That leads to another win for the Huskies with the score of 2-0.

Golf Ends Season

On Monday, September 27, the golf team competed in the sectional tournament at Cadiz Country Club. It was an 18 hole match and the team came in 6th overall. Aiden Sliva lead the team with a score of 85 and Heath Clay followed with a score of 88. Overall, the team did very well, as this was the conclusion of their season.

French III Projects

Mrs. Wood’s French class completed projects on endangered animals. The students have to write in French about what the animals are, how they as individuals can try to help, and what organizations can help their animals. 8th Grade Volleyball Falls to Harding

On Tuesday, September 28, hosted at Harrison Central, the 8th grade volleyball team played Harding, sadly ending in a loss with an overall score of 2-0. While the first set wasn’t the best with an ending score of 11-25, the 8th grade team put up a great fight during the second set with the score concluding at 24-26. During the last set, Jaylin Ward completed an amazing dig, leaving the crowd shook in excitement.

Varsity Volleyball vs. Ferry

Harrison Central Huskies Varsity Volleyball hosted Martins Ferry on Thursday, September 30. The Huskies won with a score of 26-24 for the first set, 25-19 for the second, and 25-16 for the last. McKayla Dunkle had 14 kills, 4 blocks, and 9 digs, Danica Rensi with 6 kills and 9 digs. Nadia Tweedy had 6 kills, Logan Johnson had 25 assists and 14 digs, Maddy Butler had 13 digs, Leah Cottrell had 12 digs, and Sarah Touville with 12 digs.

7th Grade Volleyball Defeats Harding

On Tuesday, September 28, the 7th grade volleyball team defeated Harding. The first set was 25-15. The second set was 25-18. The final score was 2-0. Congratulations to the 7th grade volleyball team for picking up another victory.

Cross Country at Sandy Valley

On Saturday, September 25, the high school cross country team traveled to Sandy Valley. Top three girls were: Gretchin Dulkoski with a 24:08 in 37th place, Maddy Edwards with a 24:32 in 41st place, and Grace Dulkoski with a 29:30 in 86th place. Top three boys were: Aiden Hayes with a 20:46 in 54th place, Avery Wallace with a 20:58 in 58th place, and Brent Malcomb with a 21:14 in 62nd place. It was a good race for everyone.

Junior Varsity Volleyball Falls to Beaver Local

On Monday, September 27, the junior varsity volleyball team lost against Beaver Local. Unfortunately, the final score was 2-0, the Huskies losing. The first set score was 25-6 and 25-19 in the second set. Both of the teams tried to play their best, but Beaver Local got the victory of the game.

Fall Play Auditions

On Tuesday, September 24, the auditions for the fall production of Clue were held in the auditorium. Congratulations to all of the cast members; Peyton Roski as Wadsworth, Gracie Smith as Yvette, Bonnie Reamer as Miss Scarlet, Esther Lopez as Mrs. Peacock, Alex Dray as Mrs. White, Holden Anthony as Colonel Mustard, Jaden Hunt as Professor Plum, Charles Vint as Mr. Green, Alex Dickey as the cook, Kira Birney as the singing telegram girl, Lindsay Heavilin as auxiliary Scarlet, Naturelle Curtis as backup cop, Tobias Dorn as Mr. Boddy, Casper Snyder as the motorist, Selena Mojica as the chief of police, Carleigh Burgess as the unexpected cop, Cecilia Bellerive as backup cop, and Miloo Haney as auxiliary Mustard. The play will be held on November 12th, 13th, and 14th.

Varsity Football Falls to St. Clairsville

On Friday, September 24, the varsity football team played St. Clairsville, away. The first quarter ended with St. C -14, Harrison 0 and the Huskies were still struggling at halftime, 35-0. The Huskies started to put in some work during the third quarter, which ended with a score of 42-7, but in the end, the final score was 55-7. Hayden Cassidy led the Huskies running 181 yards total.

Boys’ Soccer Defeats Carrollton

The Huskies defeated the Warriors on Thursday, September 30, by a score of 4-1. Jacob Mattern scored two of the Huskies goals, and had one assist. Jace Madzia scored one goal, and Mack Marshall scored one goal and had one assist. This was Mack Marshall’s first goal of the season. The boys worked hard and strong together as a team.

8th Grade Volleyball Defeated by Union Local

On Saturday, September 25, the 8th grade volleyball team unfortunately lost their game against Union Local. They only played two sets, their first set was 25-14 and their second set was 25-10. In the first set, the girls were close but ended up falling apart. Even though they lost, they still played strong as a team.

7th Grade Volleyball Defeats Union Local

On Saturday, September 25, the 7th grade volleyball team traveled to Union Local, and left with a win. They lost their first set 23-25, but then came back with two wins, 25-19 and 25-17. Both teams played well, but the Huskies were able to go home with a win.

Varsity Volleyball vs. St. Clairsville

On Wednesday, September 29, varsity volleyball faced St. Clairsville, at home. Unfortunately, St. Clairsville took the win, 3-2. The scores were 25-17, 25-18, 25-16, 26-24 and 15-9. McKayla Dunkle had 18 kills, 8 blocks and 9 digs. Maddy Butler had 35 digs, Sarah Touville had 17 digs, Danica Rensi had 5 kills and 15 digs. Logan Johnson had 31 assists.

7th Grade Volleyball Falls to Martins Ferry

On Thursday, September 30, the 7th grade volleyball team played at Martins Ferry. They played two sets, but sadly the score was 25-9 for the first set, but they had a large jump in score, as the second set was 25-22.

On Thursday, September 30, the 8th grade volleyball team traveled to Martins Ferry. They played two sets, resulting in a loss. The first set was 25-13. The second set was 25-18.

Junior Varsity Volleyball Falls to Martins Ferry

On Thursday, September 30, the junior varsity volleyball team was defeated by Martins Ferry. Harrison Central lost in two sets, with a good effort. The first set score was 26-24, and the second set score was 25-22.

Girls’ Varsity Soccer Falls to Brooke

On Thursday, September 30, the Huskies lost to Brooke with a score of 6-0. With this being the last home game, sadly the Huskies took a loss, with Brooke scoring five in the first half, and one in the second half. The Huskies record is now 6-7-1.

Homecoming Game

On Friday, October 8, the homecoming parade will begin at 5:20 at Scott United Methodist Church. The parade route will go through town to the square, then continue to the school and down to the football field. Male class attendants and king candidates will be announced at 6:00pm, and the king will be crowned. Female class attendants and queen candidates will be announced at halftime, and the queen will be crowned. Congratulations to those students selected by their classmates to serve as their class attendants and candidates.

Landscape Design

In art class, first grade has been working on their own landscape designs with Ms. V.

M is for Mouse

Students in Miss Elizabeth Tipton and Miss Anna Tipton’s kindergarten classes learned about the letter M this week. They made a mouse and completed reading and writing activities with the letter M. 

On the Hunt for Author’s Purpose

Third grade students in Miss Ferrell’s reading class were learning author’s purpose with an around the room skill card scavenger hunt.

Scientists at Work

Third graders began their technology and the design process chapter with a challenge to design and build a parachute that would lower a metal washer slower than any other parachute. The slowest parachute took 2.5 seconds to reach the ground from a distance of 6 ½ feet and was made of aluminum foil, string, and masking tape.

Friendships Blossom in the Garden

The fourth grade has begun the Friendship Flower Garden Club for all to enjoy. They are planning, designing, and learning about bulbs, perennials, and annuals. Students incorporated math skills in dividing the bulbs and determining planting depth. They will be researching the different plants’ characteristics and requirements. Many more surprises will “pop up” in the flower boxes as the seasons pass, so be on the lookout for unexpected changes as we all learn and grow together.
