Huskies Talk Issue 16

Harrison Community Hospital

Mrs. Snider, Mrs. Kulow, and Mrs. Cummings met with David Phillips, CEO of Harrison Community Hospital to finalize the agreement for a weekly nurse practitioner at Harrison Central. This is slated to begin on March 3rd. The practitioner will be available to see staff and staff’s family and students. Students will require parental releases. The practitioner will be scheduled from 7:30-11:30 and will be able to prescribe medications and do referrals.

Special Education Updates

Coordination with service providers within special education for both current services and 2022-2023 academic planning.

Campus Updates

Continued progress and monitoring within Harrison Central High School campus updates.

State Testing Administration

Collaboration within administration on State of Ohio testing for the 2021-2022 school year.

 

 

Boys’ Basketball Defeats Bellaire in Buckeye 8 Tournament

On Saturday, January 29, the varsity boys’ basketball team played Bellaire in the Buckeye 8 Tournament, which was held at Beaver Local. The first quarter ended with a score of 11-10, Bellaire, and at halftime, the score was 30-15, Huskies. At the end of the 3rd quarter, the score was 46-28, Huskies, and the final score was 66-46, giving the Huskies another win on their season.

Junior High Wrestling Invitational

On Saturday, January 31, the junior high wrestling team hosted the Richard Kirkland Invitational. The Huskies placed 10th overall, with 96 points. The placers were: Beau Rinkes placed 2nd in the 122 weight class, with a fall at 2:45, Andrew Cox placed 1st in the 128 weight class, with a fall at :44, and RJ Hendershot placed 3rd in the 172 weight class, with a fall at 2:12.

Cross Country Banquet

On Sunday, January 30, members of the cross country team were invited to a banquet held by the coaches of the team. They were provided food and drinks and the students were given awards and were congratulated for their accomplishments.

Girls’ Basketball Falls to Union Local in OVAC

On Monday, January 31, the girls’ varsity basketball team played Union Local in the OVAC Semi-Finals. Unfortunately, the girls fell short with a final score of 56-20. This loss dropped their overall record to 8-10, but they’re looking forward to their upcoming games.

Wrestling Victorious Over Cambridge

On Tuesday, February 1, our Huskies wrestling team traveled to Cambridge, winning with a score of 39-24. The Huskies won all five of their contested weight classes. They had four falls: Justin Sampson, Leland Lopez, Hunter Bittinger, and Landen Thomas, and Bryce Wallace picked up a decision, 12-8.

Junior High Wrestling Falls to Cambridge

On Tuesday, February 1, the junior high wrestling team traveled to Cambridge. The Huskies unfortunately lost, 27-6. Beau Rinkes was the lone victor of the night, as he won by fall at 3:20.

Girls’ Basketball Defeats Toronto

On Wednesday, February 2, the girls’ basketball team played away at Toronto. They took the win with a final score of 62-23. McKayla Dunkle set a school record and a new career high with 40 points. Emma Fischer scored 10 points and Maddy Butler had 8 assists.

Boys’ Basketball Falls to East Liverpool

On Wednesday, February 2, the junior varsity and varsity boys’ basketball teams played at East Liverpool. The junior varsity lost 64-36. Unfortunately, the varsity also lost, 77-57. Jonathan Vermillion led with 20 points, Jace Madzia had 16 points, and Hayden Cassidy had 14 points.

OVAC Cheer Competition

On Saturday, February 5, the cheerleading team competed at Wesbanco Arena for OVAC’s. The girls took their traditional team to the competition and they were very successful, placing 3rd and receiving a plaque.

Girls´ Basketball Defeated by St. Clairsville

On Monday, February 7, the girls´ basketball team played St. Clairsville, at home. The junior varsity team played a close game and by halftime, the Huskies were winning 18-13. Unfortunately, they ended the game losing, 38-32. The varsity girls also fell short, losing a close one, 40-39. Emma Fischer and Kenzie Harbold both had 10 points for the Huskies.

7th Grade Girls’ Basketball Tournament

On Monday, February 7, the 7th grade girls’ basketball team started their tournament play, against Shadyside.  The Huskies defeated Shadyside with a final score of 25-11. Bailey Smith had 11 points. Winning the game against Shadyside put them in the semifinals. The next day, Tuesday, February 8, the girls versed Martins Ferry.  Martins Ferry had a perfect season with 17-0. Unfortunately, the Huskies lost with a score of 45-11. Mikayla Pelegreen had 8 points. The 7th grade girls finished their season with a 7-5 record.

Junior High Boys’ Basketball Lose to New Martinsville

On Monday, February 7, the 7th and 8th grade boys’ basketball teams traveled to St. Clairsville to start their tournament journey. Both teams versed New Martinsville, however, they were both conquered by them. Ending their season, the 7th grade boys were defeated with a score of 22-12 and though the 8th grade fought to win their battle, they lost, 33-27.

Bowling Splits with Barnesville

The bowling team competed against Barensville, at JR Lanes, Tuesday, February 8. The boys’ varsity team won 2013-1887. High scorers were: Chad Viers 243, Davis Chrisman 191 and 229, Drew Culbertson 179, and Corey Hayes 168 and 171. The girls’ varsity team fell with a score of 1802-1656. High scorers were: Cami Basich 171, Aleyna Runevitch 169, Lauren Best 152 and 144, and Grace Cain 130. The junior varsity boys were defeated 1036-844. High scorers were: Holden Anthony 143, Caden Anthony 118 and 101, and Aiden Hays 107. The junior varsity girls won with a score of 835-831. High scorers were: Kendra DeWees 106, Emily Schmidli 99 and 89, Hayley Willis 84, Angel Utter 77 and Cam Aughinbaugh 76. This match also honored the senior bowling members at their final home bowling match.

Boys’ Basketball Falls to St. Clairsville

On Tuesday, February 8, the boys’ basketball team traveled to St. Clairsville to play the Red Devils. The junior varsity team played a great game and came out on top with a win of 45-31. The varsity team played a tough game and by the end of the first half, the score was 38-28. Unfortunately, the boys were not able to take the lead, and ended the game with a loss to the Red Devils. The final score was 70-49, Jonathan Vermillion leading the team with 28 points.

Girls’ Basketball Falls Short to Big Red

On Thursday, February 10, the girls’ basketball team hosted Steubenville. The junior varsity team tried their best, but they lost with a final score of 40-29. Unfortunately, the varsity girls fell short in a close one, 45-42. The team has a short turn around though, as they host River on Friday.

Academic Challenge Falls to Indian Creek

On Thursday, February 10, the academic challenge team traveled to Indian Creek. Unfortunately, the team lost with a score of 3-0. The team looks to add another win on Monday, February 14, at Buckeye Local.

As part of our PBIS mission, Harrison Central is highlighting the idea of doing things “The Huskies Way.” To our school this means finding a way to be positive during even the toughest times, paying it forward with kindness and compassion, and always being respectful, responsible, and ready. Wrestling @ Union Local & Shadyside

On Wednesday, February 9, the Huskies faced off against Union Local and Shadyside. The Huskies won 48-15 against Shadyside, and 42-30 against Union Local. Justin Sampson weight class 106, Austin Fulton weight class 113, Leland Lopez weight class 132, Servacio Lopez weight class 138, Bryce Wallace weight class 144, Hunter Bittinger weight class 150, Michael Smith weight class 175, Tevan Palmer weight class 190, and Lucas Thomas weight class 215 all won at least one of their matches.
