Huskies Talk Issue 2

On Tuesday Mrs. Snider reviewed the CARES ACT/ESSER funding. These funds are provided by the federal government to the states. Ohio has in turn disbursed the funds to schools through ESSER I, ESSER II, and ESSER III. Thus far these funds have provided an additional custodian, sanitation equipment and supplies, masks, dividers, school supplies, thermometers, scanners, summer remediation, and school year reading and math remediation. The district has placed orders for additional playground equipment, an outdoor learning center, and educational equipment. 

The Superintendent attended the Family Children First Zoom meeting. A presentation was given by a special education advocate who spoke about the rights of parents when dealing with special education issues. 

HHTA and Administration held a Labor Relations meeting on Friday. COVID and student discipline were discussed.

Collaboration with teachers and families 

Professional development focus ensues within meetings and teacher discussion.

The monthly Administrators’ meeting was held September 14th. Evaluations, assessments, and special education topics were a few of the items discussed. 
 

 

Cross Country at Dover

On Saturday, September 11 our cross country team traveled to Dover. The top three times for the boys were: Aiden Hays in 49th place with a time of 22:25, Charles Garbrandt in 53rd with a time of 22:34, and Avery Wallace in 56th place with a time of 23:10. The top three girls were: Maddy Edwards in 32rd place with a time of 26:10, Gretchen Dulkoski in 54th place with a time of 28:45, and Jillian Forman in 73rd place with a time of 33:22.

Volleyball Falls to St. Clairsville

On Saturday, September 11 the varsity volleyball team traveled to St. Clairsville. Unfortunately, they lost 3-0, with scores of: 25-23, 25-19, 25-19. The team was led by McKayla Dunkle with 11 kills, Logan Johnson with 18 assists, and Maddy Butler with 14 digs. However, the junior varsity team left with a win of 2-1.

Boys’ Soccer Ties Oak Glen

The boys’ soccer team tied Oak Glen 1-1 on Friday September 10. It was their senior night, as the four seniors Mack Marshall, Jacob Mattern, Ben Puskarich, and Clayton Everhart were recognized. Jaydis Yoho made five saves on goal, Jacob Mattern had one goal, and Jace Madzia had one assist.

Boys’ Varsity Soccer Falls to East Liverpool

On Tuesday, September 14 the boys’ soccer team hosted East Liverpool. Unfortunately, the Huskies lost to the Potters 3-0. Jaydis Yoho was goalie and had five saves. The Huskies played well but the Potters managed to get some goals past us and take the upper hand, ending in a sad loss.

Volleyball crushes Martins Ferry

On Monday, September 13, the volleyball team beat the Martins Ferry Purple Riders. Martins Ferry won the first set 25-23, but the Huskies came back and won the last three sets: 25-15, 27-25, and 25-15. McKayla Dunkle led the team with 22 kills, 14 aces, 13 digs, and 7 blocks. Maddy Butler had 18 digs, Danica Rensi had 13 digs, Leah Cottrell had 11 digs and Sarah Touville had 10 digs. Logan Johnson had 25 assists. The Huskies are now 3-6.

Girls’ soccer falls to Madonna

On Monday, September 13, the soccer team traveled to Weirton Madonna to play a non-conference game. Both teams started out strong and were tied 0-0 at the half. The Blue Dons came out strong in the second half getting fouled and getting a PK, making it 1-0. Huskies junior, Gracie Rogers, scored a goal five minutes later. The final score was 2-1 Blue Dons. Goalie Vanessa Dowdle had seven saves for the day.

School Counselors Introduce New Program

Friday, September 10, the school counselors, Ms. Doren and Mr. Richards, began visiting English classes to discuss various topics. The counselors also introduced the new SchooLinks website, where students set future goals in means to succeed.

Junior High Volleyball Splits with Martins Ferry

Monday, September 13, both the 7th and 8th grade volleyball teams put up a great fight against Martins Ferry. Although the score was close, the 7th grade sadly was defeated 2-0. The first set finished with a score of 25-21 and the second set ended with a score of 25-16. Despite the 7th grade volleyball team losing, the 8th grade team added another win to their record! The game came to a halt with a 2-0 victory. The score of the first set was 25-18 and the second set score was 25-21.

Golf Falls to Buckeye Local

On Wednesday, September 15, the Huskies golf team traveled to Buckeye Local. The Huskies final score was 174 and Buckeye Local finished with a score of 167. Nash Roberts overall score was a 35. Heath Clay’s overall score was a 41.

Cross Country at Brooke

On Wednesday, September 15, our cross country team traveled to Brooke High School. The top three boys were: Brent Malcomb with a 20:41 in 23rd place, Charles Garbrandt with a 21:22 in 29th place, and Colton Howell with a 21:24 in 31st place. Top three girls were: Maddy Edwards with a 24:22 in 15th place, Gretchin Dulkoski with a 28:04 in 40th place, and Grace Dulkoski with a 32:40 in 65th place.

Boys’ Golf OVAC’s

On Tuesday, September 14, the golf team played an 18 hole match at Speidel for the OVAC tournament. They were up against nine different teams. The team had an overall score of 387, coming in fifth place. Our leading scorers were Aiden Sliva with a total score of 88 and Nash Roberts with a score of 95. -

Girls’ Soccer at East Liverpool

On Friday, September 16, the Huskies girls’ soccer team traveled to East Liverpool. Unfortunately, the girls suffered a loss, with a score of 3-2. Colette Downs scored both goals, while Lexi Smith had 1 assist, and Vanessa Dowdle recorded 7 saves.

Junior High Volleyball Defeats Bellaire

Tuesday, September 14 the girls played home against the Big Reds. Both 7th and 8th grade teams won in two sets. The 7th grade scores were: 25-22 and 27-25, and the 8th grade girls won with a whopping 25-9 and 25-12. Good job to the junior high volleyball girls for their victories!

High School Volleyball Falls to Steubenville

On Wednesday, September 15, varsity and junior varsity volleyball faced Steubenville Big Red, away. Unfortunately, both varsity and junior varsity took a loss. The final score of the varsity game was 3-1; 19-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-27 and the junior varsity was 2-0. The Huskies were led by Logan Johnson with 37 assists and 18 digs, McKayla Dunkle with 26 kills, Maddy Butler with 30 digs, Sarah Touville with 20 digs, and Danica Rensi with 14 digs.

High School Volleyball Falls to Indian Creek

The high school volleyball teams went against Indian Creek on Thursday, September 16, but sadly both varsity and junior varsity took a loss. Both teams lost in straight sets, varsity at 3-0 and junior varsity at 2-0. The ending score for the varsity game of each set was; 25-14 for the first set, 25-18 for the second set, and 25-22 for the last set. The Huskies were led by Maddy Butler with 24 digs, Sarah Touville with 15 digs, Danica Rensi with 14 digs, Logan Johnson with 14 assists and 10 digs, and McKayla Dunkle with 9 kills.

Girls’ Varsity Soccer Defeats Edison

On Saturday, September 11, the girls’ soccer team hosted Edison for their senior recognition day. The Huskies defeated the Wildcats 10-0. The Huskies were led by Lily Gibbons with 3 goals, Collette Downs with 2 goals, and Lexi Smith, Maggie Goudy, Maddy Bender, Isabel Yeager, and Kadence Tanner all scoring 1 goal. Angi Ferri had 3 assists, while Rebecca Downs, Kadence Tanner, and Alina Williams all had 1 assist. Vanessa Dowdle had 5 saves.

Boys Soccer Defeats Philo

On Thursday, September 16 the boys’ soccer team traveled to Philo and came home victorious with a score of 2-1. Jace Madzia scored both goals, while Ben Puskarich assisted Jace in scoring the goals. Both goals were scored during the second half of the game.

Class Officer Elections Held

Class officer elections were recently held for the 2021-2022 school year. Congratulations to the following students who were elected by their classmates. 7th grade class officers are; President- Lilli Smith, Vice-President- Shaylen Bethel, Secretary- Teagan Bethel, and Treasurer- Abigail O’Rourke. 8th grade class officers are; President- Zane Carson, Vice-President- Matthew Hilbert, Treasurer- Michael Stock, and Secretary- Vitto Parziale. 9th grade class officers are; President- Lily Gibbons, Vice-President- Anthony Pelegreen, Secretary- Avri Puskarich, and Treasurer- Caleb Miller. 10th grade class officers are; President- Ava Carson, Vice-President- Alex Dray, Treasurer- Isabel Yeager, and Secretary- Carys Haney. 11th grade class officers are; President-Taylor Cope, Vice-President-Jace Madzia, Secretary-Lexi Smith, and Treasurer- Mackenzie Harbold. 12th grade class officers are; President- Kenzi Bailey, Vice-President- Jacob Mattern, Secretary- Sarah Touville, and Treasurer- McKayla Dunkle.
