Harrison Hills City School District is implementing new threat detection machines at all campus entrances to enhance school security. These machines are fast, efficient, and designed to be non-intrusive. Our goal is to provide a safe, welcoming environment for everyone.
Frequently Asked Questions:
What is the purpose of the new threat detection machines?
The new machines provide fast and efficient screening for dangerous weapons or other threatening items, ensuring a safe learning environment for everyone.
Who will be required to go through the screening process?
All staff, students, and visitors must pass through the screening system before entering the school during school hours and at school sanctioned events.
How many lanes will be available for screening?
We will have six screening lanes spread across three different stations on campus to ensure a smooth and efficient entry process for everyone.
Will the threat detection machines be used during school-sanctioned events?
Yes, the machines will be implemented for all school-sanctioned events. This includes entering our athletic complexes for games and events.
How do the machines work?
These devices use advanced technology to quickly scan individuals as they walk through, detecting potential threats without the need for stopping. If the scan is clear, a green light will indicate you are free to proceed. If a potential threat is detected, a red light will flash, and you will be asked to step aside for rescreening.
What items need to be removed before passing through the machines?
Before entering the lane, place all electronic devices, such as Chromebooks, iPads, AirPods, cellphones, and Apple Watches on the table. Walk through the machine with your backpack and outerwear on. Click here to view a full list of items to remove prior to entering the lane.
What happens if the red light flashes?
If the system detects a potential threat, the red light will flash, and you will be asked to step aside for further screening. Most of the time, the system is triggered by harmless items. Security will inspect the item, confirm there is no threat, and then allow you to enter.
How long does the screening process take?
The process is designed to be quick and efficient, allowing students, staff, and visitors to enter the building with minimal disruption.
Will this process delay arrival times for students and staff?
We do not anticipate delays as there will be six screening lanes in operation. However, we recommend allowing a few extra minutes during the first few days of implementation while everyone gets used to the process.
What if a student forgets to place their electronic devices or other items on the table?
If a student forgets to remove their devices, the system may trigger a red light. They will be asked to remove their device and pass through the machine again.
Where should visitors enter the building?
Visitors should use the main entrance for the school they are visiting (Jr/Sr High or Elementary). Visitors will be screened outside of the main door via a two-way intercom system. If you are picking up a student and prefer not to be screened, school personnel will meet you at the door with your child. View our visitor guide here.
Can individuals with medical devices safely go through the machine?
Yes, but if you have concerns about how the machine may interact with your medical device, please notify the resource officer or school personnel before entering.
Is there a specific entrance I need to use?
Students should use the regular entrances they currently use during school hours. Visitors should use the main entrance of the building they are visiting (Jr/Sr High or Elementary).
What happens if a dangerous item is detected?
If a dangerous item is detected, security personnel will follow established protocols to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
Will this be a permanent change?
Yes, this system is part of our ongoing commitment to providing a safe learning environment for everyone.
